Our Binational Mission

We partner with communities to support families building their dream of a home with volunteers and above all, mutual trust.

Colaboramos con comunidades para apoyar a las familias en la autoconstrucción de su sueño de un hogar con voluntarios y sobre todo, confianza mutua.

Our Vision

We envision a world in which communities across borders work in solidarity toward a common dream of sustainable, dignified housing for all people.

We believe everyone deserves safe and dignified housing. We hope that every individual who participates in our program will be transformed into a person of love, compassion and respect for all other peoples and cultures, and will intentionally act upon that transformation.

Our Values

We believe...

Inclusion

All persons possess the potential to be part of a vibrant community and that everyone has something to teach and something to learn. Through a commitment to inclusion we strengthen cross-border relationships and build community.

Community

Our work begins and ends with community development, and that the construction of dignified housing builds not only an actual physical community in Mexico but also builds a community across borders which fosters mutual understanding as our volunteers are immersed in the communities they serve and in which they are now an integral part.

Trust

Personal relationships are built on trust.  This trust is vital to our work. Trust, in all levels of the organization, enables us to have open dialogue to address inequalities and work towards a better world, and enables us to become partners with those with whom we serve.

Participation

Everyone participates in the work of our organization in their unique way, and we value the full participation of all involved in it. We're at our best when families in Mexico participate through sweat equity and mutual support, staff participates by building community connections and providing technical labor, volunteer partners participate by spending time in Tijuana constructing homes, and faithful supporters participate through sharing their time, talent & treasure.

Respect

Every individual who participates in our program- volunteers, board members, staff, families- will be transformed into persons of love, compassion and respect for all people and cultures regardless of immigration or socioeconomic status.

Fundación Esperanza de Mexico and Esperanza International respectfully acknowledge that our activities take place on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Kumeyaay people. We recognize their long standing relationship with this land, extending from time immemorial. We honor the past, present, and emerging Kumeyaay elders for their wisdom and stewardship of these territories.

This land acknowledgment reflects our commitment to honor the Kumeyaay people's rich history, culture, and wisdom. Our work and initiatives are shaped by a deep respect for the land and its original caretakers. We strive for a more respectful and equitable relationship with the indigenous communities that have and continue to inhabit this land.

This statement is more than a formality for Fundación Esperanza de México and Esperanza International; it underpins our core value of respect which includes rights, recognition, and reconciliation for indigenous peoples. We understand that acknowledging the land's traditional custodians is a first step towards addressing past and ongoing injustices. Through continued learning, understanding, and positive action, we aim to contribute to building a more equitable and sustainable world.

Esperanza International- US Team

Esperanza International (EI) was founded in 1985 in the US as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Together with our Mexican partners, we offer service-learning immersion trips where volunteers help strengthen cross-border relationships and community while building homes.

Volunteers also have the opportunity to authentically engage in the unique border culture of Tijuana, Mexico, through the eyes of its own residents.

Fundación Esperanza de México- MX Team

Fundación Esperanza de México, A.C. (FEM), was founded in 1990 as a nonprofit organization registered in México focused on home building and community development within Tijuana neighborhoods.

We believe that the construction of dignified housing builds not only an actual physical community in Mexico but also builds a community across borders which fosters mutual understanding.
